BODY BUILDING! SPIRIT BUILDING! HOME BUILDING! One of the most exciting dynamics of Habitat for Humanity is that we seek to mobilize communities in order to address the issue of substandard housing. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, worldwide ministry. Its primary goal is to eliminate poverty by building decent, affordable housing with people in need. Habitat seeks to do more than “build houses”. Habitat seeks to “build communities” to break the cycle of poverty. Through a worldwide partnership with diverse people and communities, we make affordable housing a matter of conscience as well as a necessity of life for all people. Many VISTAs find full time work in the non-profit sector after serving with HFH. The experience gained through taking initiative and being creative in developing systems within a Habitat affiliate takes people to the next level that employers are looking for! Service with Habitat for Humanity as a VISTA will change your life. Are you are a positive person with the capacity to be self-directed? Can you take initiative in developing creative solutions to the challenge of poverty housing? Are you ready to put all you have learned in school and life to a practical use that answers a deep need in our community? Say YES and build your spirit by building homes with us and apply today.

What is Habitat? Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need. Habitat has built more than 200,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1,000,000 people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses. Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor -- sweat equity -- into building their Habitat house and the houses of others. Throughout the world, the cost of houses varies from as little as $800 in some developing countries to an average of nearly $60,000 in the United States. Habitat houses are affordable for low-income families because there is no profit included in the sale price. Mortgage length varies from seven to 30 years. Habitat for Humanity's work is accomplished at the community level by affiliates -- independent, locally run, nonprofit organizations. Each affiliate coordinates all aspects of Habitat home building in its local area -- fund raising, building site selection, partner family selection and support, house construction and mortgage servicing. Habitat affiliates are where AmeriCorps*VISTA work to eradicate poverty housing in our communities. Come and Build your spirit with Habitat VISTA helping make a safe and decent home possible for those in need.
